Esri is committed to transparency in AI by providing detailed insights into AI feature functionality, data sources, and privacy/security measures. The AI Transparency Cards help customers make informed decisions about generative AI usage in ArcGIS products. See the Transparency card structure document for a complete overview of the fields and details of transparency cards.
Model cards vs transparency cards
Many AI models used in ArcGIS products have AI Model Cards-an evolving industry standard. However, Model Cards primarily document the model itself and do not provide product-specific context, such as how Esri integrates theAI feature into ArcGIS, its intended use cases, and the risk mitigations in place.
To address this, Esri developed AI Transparency Cards for ArcGIS products that use generative AI. These AI Transparency cards expand upon Model Cards by providing information on:
- Feature functionality - How AI is implemented within the ArcGIS products.
- Data sources - What data the AI feature processes and how it is handled.
- Validation and risk mitigation - What safeguards are in place to ensure security, accuracy and compliance.
- Privacy and security measures - How customer data protected and whether it is retained or used in model training.
- Known limitations - Transparency around potential biases, accuracy constraints, or responsible use consideration.
These cards provide key details allowing our customers to incorporate and utilize such AI features in a responsible manner.
AI transparency card structure
Currently, generative AI features are not yet in full production release within Esri products. However, we are providing transparency cards for AI features in the beta stage to promote early awareness and informed decision-making. We welcome customer feedback as we expand AI Transparency Card coverage across product features over time.
Each Transparency Card includes structured sections with descriptions and responses. For clarity, certain sections contain predefined options, which are summarized in AI Transparency Card Structure PDF.
